Hello RethymnoHello RethymnoThe mountain village of Margarites, about 30 km southeast of Rethymno town, is one of Crete's main pottery centres, with more than a dozen working studios lined along its narrow lanes selling hand thrown bowls, jugs, pithari and decorative pieces. Most studios are open from spring through late autumn and several, such as Ea Ceramic Studio, offer hands on wheel throwing or hand building sessions by appointment. You will also find good pottery in nearby Eleftherna (Eleutherna) and at studios around the city, but Margarites is the place to browse many makers in one walk. Clay has been worked here since Minoan times thanks to the rich local soil.
