The two main animal charities, Friends of Animals Rethymno (founded 2000) and Animal Welfare Volunteers Rethymno (founded 2012), run entirely on donations and fundraising and accept money, food and supplies for neutering and stray care. All of these are run locally so your donation stays in the district. For larger structured giving, the Food Bank of Crete redistributes food to social groceries across the island including Rethymno.
