The Municipality of Rethymno turns the Old Town into a festive centre each December, opening the season with the city and tree lighting at the Unknown Soldier's Square, usually on the last Sunday of November (30 November in 2025) at around 7pm. The programme runs through early January with the Municipal Philharmonic and the Conservatory children's choir, carol singers, a Christmas circus and dance shows, plus a silent fireworks display chosen to avoid frightening animals. Children's activities and a small Christmas village set up around the central squares, and on New Year's Eve people gather in the Old Town and at the seafront for the countdown. Confirm exact dates and the full schedule on the Municipality agenda each year, since the line up is announced in mid November.
