In Rethymno town the tap water is fine for drinking, though in peak summer some people prefer the taste of bottled. The south coast around Plakias and the mountain villages (Spili, Amari, Anogeia) have excellent fresh spring water; the famous lion-head fountains at the village of Spili run continuously with cold drinking water. When in doubt in a remote spot, ask a local or buy bottled.

Η νότια ακτή γύρω από τον Πλακιά και τα ορεινά χωριά (Σπήλι, Αμάρι, Ανώγεια) έχουν εξαιρετικό φρέσκο νερό πηγής. Οι περίφημες κρήνες με τα λιοντάρια στο Σπήλι τρέχουν συνεχώς κρύο πόσιμο νερό. Σε απομακρυσμένο σημείο, αν έχετε αμφιβολία, ρωτήστε έναν ντόπιο ή αγοράστε εμφιαλωμένο.
