The best place to understand the tradition is the Historical and Folklore Museum of Rethymno on Vernardou Street in the old town, whose halls display antique lace, embroidery and hand-woven textiles. To see living weaving and embroidery, head to the mountain village of Anogeia in the Rethymno district, long famous for its looms, where workshops and shops sell rugs, blankets and embroidered cloth. In the old town, look for embroidered and woven goods in the small craft shops on the quieter lanes such as Souliou and around Vernardou rather than on the busiest tourist streets.
