Petrol stations are plentiful in and around Rethymno town and along the national road (E75) on the north coast, run by brands such as EKO, BP, Shell, Avin, Aegean and Revoil, and stations on the highway and edge of town are often cheaper than central ones. The picture changes inland and on the south coast: in mountain villages and around Plakias, Spili, Anogeia and Amari stations are fewer, smaller and tend to close earlier in the evening and on Sundays. If you are heading into the Amari valley, up to Anogeia, or down to the south coast, fill up before you leave the coast road. Most stations take cards, but carry some cash for small rural ones, and note that fuel is sold by attendants, not self-service.
