Rethymno town has all three major Greek supermarket chains. AB Vassilopoulos sits on Emmanouil Pachla Street near the centre, Sklavenitis has a large store near the seafront at the corner of Drakontopoulou and Kosti Papadaki streets, and Lidl is at 5 Kesarias Street, all good for a full weekly shop. The Greek chains stock a wider deli, fresh and local range, while Lidl is cheapest for staples and own brand goods. Most open early and run to around 21:00 on weekdays, close earlier on Saturday and are closed on Sundays and public holidays, so plan ahead. Smaller local minimarkets and bakeries fill the gap in the villages and on Sundays.
