Hello RethymnoHello RethymnoThe small Venetian Harbour is the picture-postcard heart of Rethymno, a curved basin lined with fish tavernas and moored boats, originally built by the Venetians in the 13th to 14th centuries. At the end of its breakwater stands the stone lighthouse, built around 1838 during the period of Egyptian rule over Crete and considered one of the best preserved Egyptian-era lighthouses on the island. The lighthouse is no longer operational but is the harbour's signature landmark, especially at sunset when crowds gather to walk the pier. The waterfront tavernas are scenic but pricier than the back streets, and walking the mole to the lighthouse is free.
Το μικρό Ενετικό Λιμάνι είναι η καρτ-ποστάλ καρδιά του Ρεθύμνου, ένας καμπυλωτός κόλπος με ψαροταβέρνες και αραγμένα σκάφη, που χτίστηκε αρχικά από τους Ενετούς τον 13ο με 14ο αιώνα. Στην άκρη του κυματοθραύστη του στέκεται ο πέτρινος φάρος, χτισμένος γύρω στο 1838 κατά την περίοδο της αιγυπτιακής κυριαρχίας στην Κρήτη και θεωρείται ένας από τους καλύτερα διατηρημένους φάρους της αιγυπτιακής εποχής στο νησί. Ο φάρος δεν λειτουργεί πλέον αλλά είναι το σήμα κατατεθέν του λιμανιού, ιδίως στο ηλιοβασίλεμα όταν ο κόσμος μαζεύεται για να περπατήσει στον μώλο. Οι ταβέρνες της προκυμαίας είναι γραφικές αλλά ακριβότερες από τα στενά πίσω δρομάκια, και η βόλτα στον μώλο ως τον φάρο είναι δωρεάν.
