Hello RethymnoHello RethymnoA panigyri is a village saint's day festival, an open-air party held near the church or in the main square with live Cretan lyra and laouto music, dancing, grilled meat and plenty of raki and local wine. They run mainly from late spring through summer into early autumn across the Rethymno district, in villages like Anogeia, Spili, Amari, Margarites and many others, each celebrating its own patron saint. The biggest cluster is around 15 August, the Dormition of the Virgin (Dekapentavgoustos), when villages with a Panagia church such as those in the Amari valley celebrate for the 14th and 15th, and Anogeia is well known for its summer cultural festival too. There is no central calendar, so ask locally or watch for handmade posters on village notice boards and kafeneia; everyone is welcome and there is rarely an entry charge.
Το πανηγύρι είναι η γιορτή του αγίου ενός χωριού, ένα υπαίθριο γλέντι κοντά στην εκκλησία ή στην κεντρική πλατεία με ζωντανή κρητική λύρα και λαούτο, χορό, ψητό κρέας και άφθονη ρακή και ντόπιο κρασί. Γίνονται κυρίως από την άνοιξη ως το καλοκαίρι και τις αρχές του φθινοπώρου σε όλον τον νομό Ρεθύμνου, σε χωριά όπως τα Ανώγεια, ο Σπήλι, ο Αμάρι, τα Μαργαρίτες και πολλά άλλα, με κάθε χωριό να γιορτάζει τον δικό του πολιούχο. Η μεγαλύτερη συγκέντρωση είναι γύρω στις 15 Αυγούστου, την Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου (Δεκαπενταύγουστος), όταν χωριά με εκκλησία της Παναγίας, όπως στην κοιλάδα του Αμαρίου, γλεντούν στις 14 και 15, ενώ τα Ανώγεια φημίζονται και για το καλοκαιρινό πολιτιστικό φεστιβάλ τους. Δεν υπάρχει κεντρικό πρόγραμμα, οπότε ρωτήστε ντόπιους ή προσέξτε τις χειροποίητες αφίσες στις πλατείες και τα καφενεία. Όλοι είναι ευπρόσδεκτοι και σπάνια υπάρχει εισιτήριο.
