Anogeia, the mountain village on the slopes of Psiloritis at the eastern edge of the Rethymno district, is Crete's best known weaving centre, where women work horizontal wooden looms with Psiloritis sheep wool to make rugs, blankets, runners and bags in bold geometric patterns. Several family run shops along the main street sell finished pieces, and a community weaving school reopened in 2022 to keep the craft alive. In Rethymno town you can also see traditional weaving, embroidery and lace at the Historical and Folklore Museum on Vernardou Street, which gives context to what the village makers still produce. Prices reflect that good pieces are slow handwork, not factory goods.
